by Cassandra Clare
I had heard of the Mortal Instruments Series but reading the dust cover I had no interest in reading the books. Then I happened to see the City of Bones movie. And surprisingly really liked it.
That made the book hard to read and judge on its own. There are quite a few changes between the book and movie. I kept on mixing up what happened in the movie and the book, which made certain chronology hard to follow in the book. I still liked the story but I liked the movie better. I really felt the actor of Jace brought his characters attitude and vulnerability to life.
The story is about a normal 15 year old named Clary. Or at least she thinks she and her mother are normal. Until she witness a murder where the body disappears, right in front of her eyes, and her mother is kidnapped. She finds out that her mother was a Shadowhunter, a demon killer, in hiding. And the murderers are three shadowhunters who really killed a demon. Clary has shadowhunter blood and so can see the supernatural things in the world as she practices. The three shadowhunters are around her age, Isabelle, Alec, and Jace. With his arrogance, charm and confidence Clary finds herself immediately drawn to Jace. The four of them find themselves drawn into a race to find one of the Mortal Instruments of the shadowhunters, the Mortal Cup, stolen years ago.
The books reads a little simple but it makes it a quick, easy read. I like the world the author has created and general premise. It has an interesting take on those who protect the world from demons.
Overall I found the movie more enjoyable, though I wonder what I would think of the book had I read it before seeing the movie.
